Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury’s father has died.
Rémi Fleury died at home on Jan. 5, according to an obituary published in the Citizen on Saturday. He was 68.
Although the councillor had what he has previously characterized as a “distant” relationship with his father, he’s been forced since 2011 to declare a conflict of interest regarding Claridge Homes because the elder Fleury was a salesman for the company.
The conflict meant Fleury couldn’t address in any way zoning issues related to Claridge, nor could his staff. He couldn’t talk about projects with residents, make a presentation to the planning committee (as is usual in these cases), nor could he vote on Claridge items before council.
As the representative of a dense, downtown ward under pressure to intensify, the conflict has been a source of frustration for some residents and community activists.
Several opponents also raised the issue during last fall’s municipal election.
But it appears not to have been an issue for a majority of voters, as Fleury, 29, handily won re-election on Oct. 27.
In a statement, Claridge Homes said Rémi Fleury worked for the developer for seven years.
“We remember him as a true gentleman known for his kindness and grieve for the loss of our friend,” the statement said.
A memorial mass will be held Jan. 17 at Sacré-Coeur Church (591 Cumberland St.) at 11 a.m.
