Toronto police expect to lay charges of second-degree murder in the stabbing Saturday of a 51-year-old downtown man, in the city’s first homicide of 2015. Police answering a call at an apartment building at 330 Jarvis Street at 6:30 Saturday evening found Brent Gartner suffering from multiple stab and slash wounds. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
A report from CP24, citing unidentified paramedics, said a samurai sword had been used in an altercation at the building. Constable David Hopkinson, a police spokesman, did not confirm that report. “It was some kind of slashing weapon – a knife or something.”
Shortly afterward, police received a call about a second man with serious stab and slash wounds, and found him near the building where Mr. Gartner was stabbed. The man, who is in his sixties, was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery. He is now in police custody, and police plan to charge him with second-degree murder, a police source said. The two men knew each other, the source said. Police have not released his name.
