A protest by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union outside the office of Ottawa South MPP John Fraser on Tuesday featured a big puppet of Premier Kathleen Wynne.
The union that represents thousands of front-line workers in Ontario government ministries is negotiating a new contract and is unhappy with the government’s bargaining position. Wynne’s negotiators have been demanding freezes to workers’ overall pay and benefits, with increases in any part of the contract having to be offset by reductions somewhere else.
OPSEU president Smokey Thomas says the government is trying to close a $12.5-billion budget deficit on the backs of workers, while it overspends on external contracts, and has organized rotating pickets at Liberal MPPs’ offices all around the province to object.

A caricature of Ontario Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne stands out in a group of about 16 OPSEU members who held an “info-picket” in front of MPP John Fraser’s office in Ottawa.
