Neil Doef, the young Smiths Falls hockey talent who recently suffered a devastating spinal injury during an international tournament, says he is “ready to do whatever it takes,” according to a Facebook page run by his supporters.

“I know this journey is going to be long, but with all the support and my determination I’m ready to do whatever it takes!” a post on the Doefstrong page reads.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has given my family and I this unbelievable support. The support is appreciated beyond words! ?#?Thank?-You,” a second post reads.

The two notes, posted one after the other, were “directly from Neil,” the page says. It’s the first time the 17-year-old has spoken publicly since a Dec. 14 on-ice collision at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley, Sask.

Doef, a star player with the Smiths Falls Bears, lost all movement in his lower body as a result of the incident.

A post last week to the Doefstrong page said that Doef had “regained some sensation and movement in one leg” but added that he still faces a long rehabilitation.

Although the family has not spoken directly to the public about the incident, the Facebook page has become a source for updates about the teen’s condition and fundraising efforts. A post on Monday said the Canadian Tire store in Smiths Falls alone had raised $2,450 for Doef and his family.
