Ottawa police commenced a "criminal investigation" near (or inside) the Chimo hotel across from the St. Laurent Mall in Ottawa, Tuesday evening, January 20, 2015. Early reports indicate an RCMP presence, deployment of a tactical unit and possible hazardous materials being transported by a man traveling to Ottawa.

RCMP in the Halifax area evacuated homes in two separate areas Tuesday after finding hazardous chemicals at both those locations.
A LinkedIn profile for a Christopher Phillips who lives in Halifax describes that man as having been an attending eye surgeon at Boston University, gone to Sawyer Business School at Suffolk University and completed a degree in medical and business law from the same institution’s law school.
Phillips lists his bachelor of science in biology and chemistry from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma’s College of Medicine. The profile also lists Phillips as the manager of Neurology and Sleep Medicine Associates, Inc.
According to Nova Scotia’s business registry, Neurology and Sleep Medicine Associates, Inc. has been an active business since 2009 when it was incorporated. The registry lists the director, president, secretary and recognized agent as Gosia Phillips, whose address is listed as 43 Parkedge Crescent in Dartmouth, N.S., where RCMP were investigating Tuesday. Nothing of note was found at that home.
A woman who answered the phone at the Parkedge Crescent home Wednesday morning said Gosia was at work and that she was there “sitting the babies.”
Before searching that home, RCMP in Nova Scotia descended on a home at 54 Lakeridge Crescent earlier Tuesday, where police found a package in the garage containing “hazardous chemicals.” Property records accessed by the Halifax Herald list the homeowner of that address as Gosia Eve Phillips.
Ottawa police blockade Lemieux St. near the Chimo hotel in Ottawa, Tuesday evening, January 20, 2015. Early reports indicate an RCMP presence, deployment of a tactical unit and possible hazardous materials being transported by a man traveling to Ottawa.
Police in Ottawa were asking the publicTuesday morning to stay clear of the St. Laurent Boulevard and Joseph Cyr Street area.
Several stretches of road were closed:
* the 174 St-Laurent off ramp was closed;
* Joseph Cyr Street was closed from Cyrville Road to Lemieux Street;
* Lemieux Street was closed at St-Laurent Blvd;
* Labelle Street was closed from Lemieux Street to Michael Street; and
* Michael Street was closed from Cyrville Road to Labelle Street.
Ottawa police Const. Chuck Benoit could not say how many people were escorted from the hotel. The Chimo Hotel website says it has 256 guest rooms.
“We used OC Transpo to transport these families to another location inside Ottawa at another hotel,” he said.
More to come.
