The now-common sound of chainsaws and wood chippers will be heard next in Hampton Park as the National Capital Commission begins removing more dead and dying ash trees.
Nearly 400 trees will be cut in the area of Island Park Drive and Merivale Road beginning Tuesday, Jan. 27, and continuing until Feb. 3. The NCC says the Hampton Park dog-walk area won’t be affected, although park users should watch out for heavy equipment working.
The trees are infested with the emerald ash borer, a tiny insect that has killed millions of trees across North America. Late last year, the NCC removed some 600 trees in Fisher Park and along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, and the City of Ottawa has cut thousands more since the insect arrived in the region in 2008.
The Hampton Park work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting, and will include stump removal. Motorists may encounter periodic lane closures on Island Park Drive during the days.
The NCC plans to eventually replant the area.
