Ontario’s electricity-safety regulator has ordered local utilities to replace a particular model of smart meter that’s prone to overheating and could catch fire, it announced Thursday.

About 5,400 of the province’s 4.8 million meters are affected. Hydro Ottawa has never used the model, called a “Sensus 3.2 with remote disconnect,” a spokesman said. The “remote disconnect” feature lets a power company turn off a customer’s service without sending someone to do it in person.

The Sensus 3.2 is made by the same manufacturer as the smart meters that Saskatchewan ordered removed a few months ago and has a lot of the same innards. If water or other “contaminants” get inside, electricity can arc between metal components, the Electrical Safety Authority found.

Saskatchewan had 105,000 of its version of the meters installed before they were linked to eight fires. They aren’t known to have caused any fires in Ontario.

Ontario power companies that have installed Sensus 3.2 meters have until the end of March to get rid of them, but the sooner the better, the agency said.
