Ian Bush, accused of attacking a 101-year-old D-Day veteran last month, is to appear in an Ottawa court Friday morning.

He last appeared in court on Christmas Eve, just after his arrest. On that morning he met a psychiatrist at the courthouse and was then sent to the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre for a 30-day assessment.

The doctor didn’t appear in court then but relayed the message that he had no concerns about Bush’s fitness to stand trial.

Bush, 59, is charged with attempted murder, forcible confinement, and other offences after a man roughed up and robbed D-Day veteran Ernest Côté in his own apartment.

Police say a man pretending to be a City of Ottawa employee talked Côté into letting him in on Dec. 18, and then put a plastic bag over the veteran’s head and robbed him. Côté was able to free himself and call 911. Security camera images circulated widely after the incident.

Côté wasn’t seriously injured. He told a Citizen reporter after the attack: “I’m fine and in good shape,” and wished everyone a merry Christmas. His family came to stay with him.

The attack drew condemnation from Prime Minister Stephen Harper and many others.

Bush has had a long career in human resources consulting, and has never been in trouble with the law before. Family members were in court to support him last month.
