Two men wearing masks and camouflage — and carrying what could have looked like weapons — may have been headed to a comic book convention before they were arrested near the Gatineau courthouse Friday, police say.
It turned out the men were carrying plastic guns and there was “no criminal intent,” police said.
Police were called after the men were spotted in the parking lot at 200 Promenade du Portage around 1 p.m.
Several cruisers and a canine unit arrived at the scene and the men were quickly arrested and taken in for questioning.
An hour later, Gatineau police spokesman Pierre Lanthier confirmed the pair may have been attending Gatineau’s version of Comicon, a comic convention, at the nearby Palais du Congrès. But that is yet to be confirmed.
“The phone call that we received from the public is that they were armed with long firearms, but I can confirm that they were fake guns, plastic guns, so there was no criminal intent in that case,” said Lanthier. The men also had plastic replica handguns.
William McCullough, whose Service Canada office overlooks the parking lot where the men were arrested, told the Citizen the office starting buzzing when employees saw two men standing behind a small car.
“They were dressed in full paramilitary gear,” said McCullough, a senior account executive. “That was a big (concern) after what happened back in October (on Parliament Hill).”
“They weren’t doing anything other than talking to each other and adjusting their gear. Very casual. A group of us stood by the window … and watched as number of police officers began to approach the two men from multiple angles.”
He said the men dropped their guns and went down on their knees with their hands on their heads. Police approached cautiously, removed the guns and then cuffed the two and took them to separate waiting police cars.
The investigation continues.
