The Royal Canadian Geographical Society wants Canadians to vote for a national bird, like the bald eagle in the United States.

You can vote at nationalbird.cangeo.ca.

The Citizen respectfully submits a list of candidates. Please note, not all of them have made it to the official Final 40:

Eskimo curlew: Pro: Strong connection with the Arctic. Con: It’s extinct.

Starling: Con: It’s an import. Its ancestors came from another continent. Pro: That’s just like many Canadians. Bonus: Its Latin name is Sturnus vulgaris.

Butterball turkey: Pro: Can’t fly very well but bastes itself. Con: We would be the only country whose national bird needs a little TM after its name.

Warblers and vireos (pick any of them): Pro: Lovely forest songbirds. Con: Spend half the year in Florida, not setting a good example.

• Canada goose: Iconic, easy to see and recognize. Con: Poops everywhere.

Common loon: Pro: Who doesn’t love the way they swim and call? Con: Frequent mate-swappers, sometimes murdering each other.

Purple martin: Pro: Fun to watch as it flies. Con: Used to live in the wild, but can’t survive there anymore, like most of us. Needs its housing custom-built.
