The son of Lanark MPP Randy Hillier is back home safely after a personal mission to fight Muslim extremists in northern Iraq, Hillier’s office announced Tuesday.

Dillon Hillier, a former member of the Canadian Forces who’d served in Afghanistan, left in November to join Kurdish fighters trying to beat back the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

The younger Hillier quit a construction job to join the Kurds, who have been renowned for the resistance they’ve put up against a transnational militia that broke away from al-Qaida because al-Qaida wasn’t vicious enough.

The Islamic State rapidly took a lot of territory in Syria and northern Iraq last year before Western countries, including Canada, launched a campaign of airstrikes against it. Canadian special-forces troops have recently clashed with the group on the ground, as well. Kurdish forces have just taken the important Syrian city of Kobani, in a significant victory that nevertheless doesn’t mean fighting is anywhere near finished.

Hillier was self-assigned and self-equipped, even relying on a crowdfunding campaign to buy his own night-vision goggles.

“We are proud and relieved that Dillon has returned safely home from the middle-east,” said a statement from Hillier and his wife, Jane.

Dillon is readjusting to Canada and reuniting with friends and family and has nothing more to say for a while, the statement said.

“Once again, Jane and I would like to extend our profound thanks to everyone who expressed their kindness and generous support, as well as the respect shown to our family’s privacy during this time.”

Randy Hillier has been the Progressive Conservative MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington since 2007. Dillon is one of his four children.
