Ottawa police have charged a 31-year-old man from Nigeria with 41 counts of fraud, including passing counterfeit money.

Police say the man went to five different financial institutions in central and west Ottawa between Dec. 13 and Dec. 18 to change U.S. cash for Canadian bills.

In fact, police allege, all the American currency he used in the 10 separate transactions was bogus.

Chika Ogbuneke, who is in Canada on a visitor’s visa, was charged Jan. 22 with 41 counts, including fraud, passing counterfeit money, possession of the proceeds of crime and laundering the proceeds of crime.

Anyone with more information about the investigation is asked to call the Ottawa police fraud section at 613-236-1222 ext. 5433, or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 or 1-800-222-8477.
