A University of Ottawa task force formed in the weeks following allegations of sexual assault after a road trip by the university’s men’s hockey team is to present its findings on Thursday.
Few details about the task force and its report are available but a news release from the university said “the Task Force was brought together to make recommendations on fostering a campus culture that encourages respectful behaviour, prevents sexual violence and ensures students and employees can learn and work free of harassment and sexual violence.”
The men’s hockey program was suspended following allegations of sexual assault while the team was travelling for a series of games in Thunder Bay in February 2014.
Two players have been charged by Thunder Bay police as a result of the allegations.
In August, team captain David Foucher, 25, and assistant captain Guillaume Donovan, 24, both of Gatineau, were charged with sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Lakehead University student. The assault is alleged to have happened in the early hours of Feb. 2, 2014.
The school’s president and vice-chancellor Allan Rock has also said “widespread behaviour that was disreputable” by members of the hockey team also factored into the suspension.
The school has since said the suspension will remain in place for the 2015-2016 season, adding: “the University of Ottawa will make the most of the coming year to implement measures that will be key to re-launching its men’s hockey program.”
The Thunder Bay incident came as the school was in the midst of a number of sex complaints, spurring some students to allege that a “rape culture” is entrenched at the downtown campus. Last year, four student representatives resigned after making sexually aggressive comments about a female colleague.
Thursday’s report is not likely to disrupt a class action lawsuit which has been filed by players from the 2013-14 team who are seeking $6-million in damages from the university.
The 22 former team members — all but the two facing charges — are seeking $4 million in general damages and $2 million in punitive damages, claiming they played no role in the conducted that ended with the suspension of the team and were unjustly impacted by its suspension.

The team was suspended after a friend of the victim contacted administrators at the University of Ottawa on Feb. 24. The school notified police in the Northern Ontario community of the allegations.
