Saturday on the Rideau Canada provided an answer to the long debated question: What does a Scot wear under the kilt?

The answer, at least for some Scots and their colleagues taking part in Sir John A’s Great Canadian Kilt Skate, is leggings, long johns and anything else to fight off the – 30 C chill as they honoured the bicentennial of Canada’s first PM with a zip along the frozen waterway.

The skate, in association with Winterlude, ended with a concert of Scottish music at Confederation Park.

The canal skate idea was picked also up by Scottish societies in Montreal, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Calgary, as well as Ottawa.
