Dozens of minor collisions, due to drifting snow and slick roads, kept first responders busy Monday morning as traffic slowed to a crawl during the morning commute around the Ottawa area.
The edge of a storm affecting mainly Southern Ontario brought temperatures of -21 Celsius and was expected to drop as much as 5 centimetres of snow through the day.
The storm also delayed many flights at Ottawa International Airport.
Winds gusting up to 30 km/h during the morning commute made visibility difficult on roadways around Ottawa.
The Ontario Provincial Police responded to a total of 5 accidents on highways around the area, including a rollover near the eastbound Woodroofe Ave. onramp of Highway 417.
Ottawa police responded to another 11 accidents in the morning, including one at around 12:40 a.m. involving a car that struck a hydro pole.
Ottawa paramedics responded to the single-vehicle crash near Scott Street and Carruthers Avenue, near Tunney’s Pasture.
A car carrying four people struck and knocked over a hydro pole. Paramedics say the male driver was in his 20s and was treated for head and chest injuries before being transported to hospital.
Road closures were in effect for a brief period as Hydro Ottawa crews replaced the fallen pole. Ottawa police are investigating.
About four hours later, first responders were back at work, this time over on Albion Road near the Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Ottawa fire received a call at about 5:45 a.m. about a single-vehicle collision on 4837 Albion Road.
The Jaws of Life were required to extricate the driver, whose legs were trapped by the vehicle.
The patient was taken to hospital and was conscious when paramedics arrived on scene.
Ottawa schools remained open and school buses are operating, but Ottawa Student Transportation Authority warned of significant delays on many routes while buses navigate the winter weather.
The Ottawa Airport Authority warned travellers to check flights departing from the Ottawa International Airport. As of 8:45 a.m. a total of 14 flights had been delayed. Several others were facing delays.
