Safety concerns about the new Airport Parkway Bridge will be on the agenda at a public safety audit Tuesday night at the pedestrian bridge site.

The meeting, to be led by councillors Diane Deans and Riley Brockington along with city staff, will begin at the Cahill Drive/Plante Drive entrance to the pathway at 7 p.m. The group will then walk the route over the bridge to the South Keys transit station.

The public is invited to join the walk and offer suggestions on how to improve safety. Dress warmly as the forecast calls for an overnight low of -13 C with a chance of snow later in the evening.

Complaints were raised about safety, poor lighting and people loitering in the area almost as soon as the much-delayed bridge opened on Nov. 29.

Others have complained about poor snow removal and treacherous, icy paths.

A second walking safety audit is planned for the spring when leaves and undergrowth will change sight lines.

The bridge is near the spot where the body of Tausif Chowdhury, an international student at Carleton University, was discovered a few days before the official opening.

The 23-year-old was beaten to death and found by two cyclists on the Sawmill Creek Pathway, which surrounds the reservoir of the same name and lies between South Keys station and the new bridge.

Two men have been charged with manslaughter and robbery in connection with Chowdhury’s death.
