There are several approaches we can take if we want to help students do better in math, experts and educators say.

Report cards are going home across the city next week, and across Ontario, Grade 9 students have just been through provincial assessments for math.

For all involved — students, teachers and parents — this is an occasion ripe for anger and anxiety. If the past is any guide, the math scores won’t be good, and the trendlines are going in the wrong direction. It looks, increasingly, like Johnny can’t add, and everyone has an opinion on why that’s the case.

Underlying this is a debate between the old way of doing math — lots of rote learning — and the new curriculum, called discovery math.

Yet the heated rhetoric obscures two real facts: First, that energetic and experimental educators have made great strides in the teaching of math that goes beyond long division and the times tables. Second, that learning something by heart is itself a form of discovery, and that many forms of human intellect and achievement have elevated memorization to a poetry or an art.

But to see this, we first need to get past the empty-headed political posturing that all sides engage in, as if by rote.

洋人教育discover是自然淘汰,所谓discover就是老师偷懒。有能力的,你啥都不教,一样爱因斯坦。精英治国。民主自由。
死记硬背是技能培训,没能力的孩子,经过教育工厂加工,一样能大学毕业。出国留学。虽然他可能没机会创新,拔尖。好歹是个饭碗。

咱追求的是平衡。给孩子机会充分自由发展,也同时给他个饭碗先。
要求过分吗?
 
加拿大的基础教育就是渣,完全就是老师懒,还整天要加薪水。
 
有利有弊,不能全盘否定。
启发式教育也好,创造行教育也好,但小99还是要背的。
 
建立在皮亚杰的认知理论基础上的discovery math对教师的要求要高很多。。

刚扫了眼九年级的EQAO,lisgar的applied course及格率只有24%。。别的学校没看
 
偶国内童鞋们的孩子都比偶的小很多,可说起数学,来个几乘几的,人五岁的速度就能完爆我家的娃们,有时候偶也郁闷.....
 
基础教育,国内的孩子很叫硬。
弄不懂为什么在爬高时,就落下来了。
