The 24-year-old man the RCMP has alleged was a key recruiter of jihadists overseas was ordered in court Wednesday not to communicate with his two co-accused and three men arrested on terrorism-related offences last month.
Awso Peshdary was ordered not to communicate with John Maguire, Khadar Khalib, both of whom police believe went to Syria to fight with ISIS.
Peshdary was also banned from communicating with the twins arrested last month on terrorism charges, Carlos and Ashton Larmond, and their friend Suliman Mohamed.
Federal Crown prosecutor Roderick Sonley told court that Peshdary had been in “frequent contact” with Ashton Larmond.
Flanked by two Ottawa police officers in the prisoner’s box, Peshdary kept his hands in the pockets of his winter parka and appeared emotionless.
Peshdary stared straight ahead for most of his first court appearance since his arrest on four terrorism charges on Tuesday.
Peshdary’s lawyer, Richard Morris, told court he was first made aware of the charges against his client from the media.
“I’m still in the dark,” Morris told court, adding he opposed the non-communication order since he had yet to see any evidence in the case.
Peshdary is scheduled to appear in court next on Feb. 9.
More to come …
