It’s the first time Alexandra Enriquez has participated in a breast cancer initiative, and the cause is really close to her.

Enriquez, 24, said it was difficult for the whole family when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; the first time when Enriquez was in elementary school and the second was when she first started at McMaster University.

“It was really hard to watch my mom go through all the chemotherapy treatments and all of the operations and the radiation,” she said.

But her mother, “my best friend,” is still with the family today so “I am really happy to be participating in an event like Bust a Move.”

Alexandra Enriquez, 24, is participating in her first breast cancer initiative. Her mother is a two time cancer survivor. She hopes raising funds for the Bust a Move event will help other families that are trying to fight breast cancer.

Bust a Move, scheduled for Mar. 28, is organized by the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation for teams and individuals to get together at the Ottawa Athletic Club to do fitness activities like yoga, zumba and aerobics.

The teams and individuals participating in the Bust a Move event are required to raise $1,000 per person for breast cancer research to participate in the event.

Linda Eagan, president of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation said that Bust a Move is their signature event, raising a total of more than $1 million in the three previous years. Last year’s event brought in more than $370,000 and organizers hope to match or beat that total this year.

In the run up of the event, a pop-up space called the Pink Lounge has opened up at the St. Laurent Centre and will be open every weekend until Mar. 22, to raise awareness of breast health initiatives and the Bust a Move event. Makeup sessions, mini-massages and prize draws are happening at the lounge.

The Pink Lounge, a pop up space at St. Laurent Centre opened up Feb. 7, to raise awareness on breast cancer fundraising initiatives. It will be open every weekend until Mar. 22.

Event co-chair Trina Fraser, who’s also captain of BrazeauZeller LLP’s Legally Pink team, said the team has staged bake sales, office potlucks and a bottle drive in recent months raising money.

“We have a few other things still planned before March and we are doing our individual fundraising as well,” she said.

Money raised goes directly to breast cancer coaching programs, clinical trials and research in Ottawa.

Susan Dent, a medical oncologist at the Ottawa Cancer Centre started a Bust a Move team to raise money for a clinical trial that focuses on breast cancer treatments that avoid side effects to the heart.

“We know that some of the breast cancer treatment can cause damage to the heart. In order to try and offer women the best cancer therapy possible, we want to try and see how we can prevent that from happening,” said Dent.

Bust a Move funds will also be used to support the Cancer Survivorship Centre on Alta Vista Road, where cancer coaching is offered to those who need it.

“When a person hears those words, you have cancer, you’re not just concerned about your body, you’re concerned about your life,” said Eagan.

Eagan said that the coaches such as nurses and social workers help with physical, emotional and practical needs.

“It’s simple but very powerful.”
