Prime Minister Stephen Harper shuffled his cabinet Monday, moving Jason Kenney to defence, Rob Nicholson to foreign affairs, and giving Democratic Reform Minister Pierre Poilievre two extra portfolios: employment and social development, and responsibility for the National Capital Commission.
Harper was forced to shuffle his cabinet with John Baird’s sudden resignation last week as Foreign Affairs minister.
Nicholson’s move to Foreign Affairs comes after serving as National Defence Minister since July 2013. He also served more than six years as minister of Justice. Kenney takes over at Defence after serving as Employment and Social Development minister since 2013. He was previously Citizenship and Immigration minister for almost five years.
Kenney will hold on to his role as Minister for Multiculturalism.
Poilievre, now the senior minister for the Ottawa area, takes over a senior economic role as minister for Employment and Social Development. He’s also now the minister responsible for the National Capital Commission, taking over that role from Baird. And he keeps his job as democratic reform minister.
“Our Government is delivering real results for Canadians by growing the economy, making communities safer, and standing up for Canadian values at home and abroad,” Harper said in a news release announcing the shuffle. “The changes to the Ministry announced today will help ensure that key portfolios continue to have the strong leadership required to advance Canadian priorities.”
Kenney tweeted the news early Monday.
“Deeply honoured to be appointed Minister of National Defence. No greater privilege than to serve the men & women of Canada’s Armed Forces,” Kenney tweeted.
