A car that collided with an OC Transpo bus near the University of Ottawa on Thursday was being chased by police before the crash, according to a witness.

The collision occurred around noon at the corner of Nicholas Street and Laurier Avenue East. It involved an articulated airport-bound No. 97 bus.

Carleton University student Kaitlyn Clark was on a northbound No. 96 bus and she watched a white car speed past pursued by an Ottawa police cruiser. Moments later, her bus came upon the collision scene and Clark watched as more police vehicles arrived.

The front of the white car was crumpled.

Clark said police handcuffed the driver, who was limping but did not appear to be seriously hurt.

There were no other reported injuries.

Police spokesman Marc Soucy confirmed that police were investigating to see if the pursuit played a role in the crash. He could not say what the chase was about.

“It’s still very fresh so we don’t have much information yet,” Soucy said.

Police have blocked off the eastbound lanes of Laurier Avenue, east of Nicholas, while they investigate.
