The federal treasury will dole out an extra $4.6 million this fiscal year to shore up security on Parliament Hill after the Oct. 22, 2014 attacks.
The House of Commons will spend an extra $3.5 million, the Senate an extra $900,000, and the Library of Parliament an extra $200,000, according to government documents.
The spending comes as a joint Commons and Senate committee is overseeing changes to security around Parliament Hill by unifying and arming the guards inside the building. Meanwhile, parliamentarian are also debating handing over operational control of security to the RCMP.
The spending is detailed in the government’s supplementary estimates, which outline items the government hadn’t expected to spend money on in this fiscal year.
MPs on the secretive and multi-party Board of Internal Economy agreed in late November to go ahead with a detailed proposal from then-sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers for security enhancements around the parliamentary precinct. According to the minutes of the Nov. 27 meeting, the board approved the security improvements and the funding request from Commons administration.
That followed a meeting weeks earlier, in which the board heard details and approved costs for extra security around constituency offices.
Those changes came weeks after a gunman killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial, then stormed Parliament Hill before being killed in a shootout with security forces inside the Centre Block. Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was killed in front of the entrance to the Library of Parliament.
