Steady snowfall and temperatures that dipped to -22 C with a bracing windchill didn’t faze dozens of people who voluntarily jumped into a dumpster full of icy cold water on Saturday.
The Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Ontario, exceeded its goal of $25,000. The money will help offset costs for holding the provincial floor hockey championships at Carleton University in May.
It’s the first time the Special Olympics event has been held in Ottawa. Organizers say the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group were glad to offer up TD Place stadium as a venue.
“They said, ‘If you want to go on the football field in the middle of winter, god bless you,’ ” said Kirk DeFazio.

In teams or all alone, plungers walked down a snowy path to where the dumpster was set up in front of the north-side stands. A small staircase led up to the platform from which they jumped into the icy bath.
Afterward, they ran back inside to warm up and drink hot chocolate.
The Special Olympics are intended for people with intellectual disabilities. Of the 19 Special Olympics sports in Ontario, 17 are available in Ottawa, including floor hockey, baseball, basketball, bowling, swimming and snowshoeing.
