Security concerns caused by the presence of up to 150 protesters prompted Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard to cancel an appearance at a party event in Gatineau on Saturday.
The Gatineau eventat the Centre des ainés de Gatineau, 196 rue Notre-Dame, was one of nine “theme forums” planned across the province in February and March to consult provincial Liberal party members.
The premier’s security officials outside the venue said they were unable to secure an entrance to the building, which was surrounded by mostly union members protesting contract issues.
Gatineau police Lieut. Jean-François Beauchamp, who was at the scene told the Citizen his force made no arrests at the “noisy” demonstration at about 1 p.m..
“I can say there were 125-150 (demonstrators) and, although it was noisy, there were no major problems for our officers. There were no arrests, no injuries. The decision to cancel the event was made (at about 1:45 p.m.) by the premier’s staff.”
Beauchamp said there were eight police officers at the scene.
Most of the protesters appeared to be public servants, nurses or teachers, all of whom are in contract disputes with the provincial government.
Stéphanie Vallée, the minister responsible for the Outaouais region, spoke on his behalf at the event.
“The premier apologizes that he was not able to be present for security reasons,” she said.
