Gov. Gen. David Johnston and Bill Gates engaged in casual conversation Wednesday at Rideau Hall as a dozen photographers captured the moment.
“This man is an honorary Canadian,” Johnston said about Gates before shaking his hand and sitting down on a blue chair in an elegantly decorated room at Rideau Hall.
Gates visited Rideau Hall to discuss Canadian philanthropy and what Johnston described as this country’s commitment and leadership in that area.
Johnston and Gates briefly talked about the weather and other topics that were inaudible before the media was escorted from the room.
The meeting in Ottawa came after Johnston’s visit last fall to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle to learn more about philanthropy.
Gates was expected to participate in a moderated discussion with Prime Minister Stephen Harper at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday.
