Mitel Networks Thursday recorded sharply improved earnings in the fourth quarter despite significant restructuring costs related to recent mergers.
The telecommunications software company reported a net fourth quarter profit of $10.8 million compared to a loss of $2.8 million during the same period a year earlier. Revenues more than doubled to $301.4 million. All figures are in U.S. dollars.
The results look less impressive when done on a pro forma or like-to-like basis — that is, assuming Aastra and a second, smaller acquisition had been part of Mitel during the fourth quarter of 2013. The Mitel-Aastra combination would have earned about $800,000 during the year-ago quarter, and generated revenues of $319.3 million.
The year-over-year sales decline masks some profound changes taking place in Mitel’s underlying business, which is shifting from installations of telephone hardware to telecommunications software known as cloud communications that customers pay for through subscriptions.
Mitel CEO Richard McBee said his firm in moving ahead of rivals in sales of cloud technologies. “Mitel is now the fastest growing and #1 market share leader in cloud communications,” he claimed.
