Days after a house fire claimed the lives of two children, the outpouring of support for a Gracefield, Que. family continues to grow.

Matthew Courtney, 4, and his sister, Melanie, 2, were sleeping upstairs when the fire broke out in the isolated house about 100 kilometres north of Gatineau. The flames and smoke intensified so quickly that their desperate parents, Teenah Snowden and Eric Courtney, were unable to reach the two small children.

The family’s home was destroyed in the blaze.

Juanita Emmerson, a friend of Teenah’s, is one of those coordinating donations. In a Facebook post, she asks people to donate food, sheets, towels, toiletries, as well as clothing for the couple and their six surviving children: boy, 15, boy, 13, girl, 10, girl, 8, boy, 6, and a baby under one year.

Items can be dropped off at three locations:

  • In Maniwaki: Emmerson’s home, 207 Kichimikan; tel: 818-334-0824
  • In Ottawa: Sonia Baroud’s home, 56 Medhurst Dr., unit D; tel: 613-298-9411
  • In Aylmer: Contact Shady Hafez for address; tel: 613-809-2111 or 613-315-5999

Items can also be dropped off at the Mini-Marché store in Gracefield. where Courtney’s mother works. The store is at 34 Rue Saint Joseph, Gracefield, J0X 1W0., tel: 819-463-4466.
