A careless effort at drying some sweaty hockey equipment has undoubtedly landed a Gatineau man in the penalty box with his family.
Early Sunday afternoon, Gatineau firefighters raced to a one-storey residential home on Rue de Flandres, near the intersection of Rue de Savoie, in response to an emergency call from the occupants who’d been forced from the building by thick, black smoke after a fire broke out in the basement.
Firefighters had the 1:30 p.m. fire under control within an hour and managed to contain the flames to the basement. But that didn’t prevent some considerable structural damage, along with smoke and water damage.
The cause of the fire remained something of puzzle until fire investigators discovered that one of the occupants had come home from a hockey game and thought to dry his equipment on the top of a stove in the basement kitchen.
Unfortunately, it appears he accidentally turned the stove on before heading upstairs. A short time later, he and the three other occupants in the house smelled smoke when the hockey pads and jerseys caught fire. The flames quickly spread and the foursome were forced to flee.
Along with the lost hockey equipment, damage was estimated at $200,000.
