The stories of troubled hearts appears to have touched the hearts of Ottawans judging by the response Sunday to the annual University of Ottawa Heart Institute Telethon.

In just over an hour of the telethon beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, about $1.8 million in pledges had been pledged, according to Françoise Makanda, a communications officer with the institute. That kind of response, she said, augured well for the organizers’ hopes of setting a telethon fundraising record.

“We are hoping to do over $7 million,” Makanda said, explaining that the telethon is actually the conclusion of year-long fundraising. “It’s been a very, very good year, and we’re very happy with the community support we’ve received thus far. I’m more than sure (the telethon) will do very well.”

So it seemed. By 4 p.m., the telethon, which is broadcast by CTV Ottawa, had received more than $634,000 worth of pledges. Fifteen minutes later, that number hit $1.8 million. By 5 p.m., the tally was $2.5 million.

If that pace continues, there is every prospect of the 24th annual telethon bettering the $6.8 million raised the previous year by the time it concludes at 7 p.m.

“The response has been even more than we expected,” Makanda said. “The response on social media from people tweeting about how grateful they are for the treatment they’ve received has been amazing.”

Ottawa’s Heart Institute is Canada’s largest cardiovascular health care centre and treats more than 80,000 people a year.

Among those who’ve benefited from that treatment is CFRA broadcaster Lowell Green, who underwent a double-bypass at the Heart Institute after he fell ill during a vacation. Lowell related his experience during the telethon.

Other institute beneficiaries who were scheduled to tell their heartfelt tales were Una Beaudry, a fervent marathoner who didn’t realize she had a heart arrhythmia. For years, she attributed her accelerated heart beat to anxiety attacks. It wasn’t until she noticed an irregular pulse through a store-bought heart rate monitor that she took her heart health into her own hands.

Similarly, Cathy Murphy, an avid rower and yogi, knew there was something wrong with her heart but until she was referred to the Heart Institute doctors had been unable to identify what her symptoms meant. When she finally arrived at the institute, she discovered she was on the brink of a fatal heart attack.

In recent years, the institute has used money from its fundraising efforts to expand the institute, conduct research, set up a Women’s Heart Health Centre and provide a new cardiac MRI system, among other new services.

For example, Dr. Thierry Mesana and Dr. Marino Labinaz have used a new technique known as the mitraclip to treat patients who don’t qualify for more invasive surgeries. The procedure, which reduces mitral valve regurgitations, has been used on a number of patients to good effect in terms of improving their quality of life.
