MPPs from all parties paid tribute Monday to Ernest Côté, praising the D-Day veteran and career public servant for his “tremendous service to Canada” and honouring him with a minute of silence in the Ontario legislature.

“While many of us never met Ernest Côté, we are all familiar with the sacrifices he made, the meaningful work he did and the tremendous legacy he leaves behind,” said Premier Kathleen Wynne. “It is truly an honour today to be able to join all the parties in this legislature to pay homage to an individual who dedicated so much to all of us.”

Côté, who oversaw logistics for the landing on Juno Beach and went ashore himself the morning of June 6, 1944, died last Wednesday at age 101. His death came just over two months after he survived a home invasion at his Rockcliffe Park condo, a crime that helped Ottawa police charge a suspect in a notorious 2007 triple homicide.

In a 30-year career in the public service after the war, Côté served as Canada’s ambassador to Finland, was deputy solicitor general at the time of the FLQ crisis and was a deputy minister in two federal departments. He also served as a governor at the University of Ottawa and on the board of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, among many other positions.

It was his dedication to French language rights and bilingualism that were praised by Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier.

“It rare occasions when we can give homage and pay respect to heroes,” Meilleur said, speaking in French. “And this is a great hero in all senses of the word. Mr. Côté, throughout his life, gave his life to his country, in the army as mentioned by the premier, and as a public servant and diplomat.

“He defended French throughout his life,” Meilleur said. “He said that to possess two official languages is to become someone who is more complete.”

Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod and NDP leader Andrea Horwath also praised Côté for his heroism and dedication to his country.

Côté’s funeral is to be held in Ottawa on March 7.
