David Currie, conductor of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, was awaiting cardiac surgery at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on Monday night, concertgoers were told.
The audience at Monday night’s concert at the National Arts Centre was told that Alain Trudel would fill in for Currie, who was named director of the orchestra in May 1992.
Currie spent 20 years with the National Arts Centre Orchestra as a double bass player before retiring in 1991 as principal bass. He is also an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa, where he teaches double bass and conducting, and conducts the university orchestra.
Monday night’s performance was the Spotlight on Youth concert with the Ottawa Youth Orchestra joining the OSO for a performance of Franck’s Symphony in D minor. The concert was to open with the OSO performing Richard Strauss’s Don Juan followed by Dance of the Wind from Jan Jarvlepp’s Garbage Concerto.
