Former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will be presented with a key to Ottawa on Thursday night, the city has confirmed.
Officials had already disclosed that a date had been set for the ceremony in discussing the municipal schedule after Mayor Jim Watson fractured his pelvis last weekend in a snowmobile mishap. On Tuesday, the city officially confirmed that the award will be presented Thursday at city hall by Deputy Mayor Bob Monette.
Alfredsson is being recognized for his hockey accomplishments and for his off-ice work with the Ottawa Senators Foundation, the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health and the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa.
Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, Alfredsson was drafted by the Ottawa Senators during the 1994 NHL entry draft.
He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year before setting franchise records for goals, assists and points over 17 seasons with Ottawa. After one season with the Detroit Red Wings, he rejoined the Ottawa club on a one-day contract on Dec. 4 so he could retire as a Senator.
The presentation ceremony is for invited guests only, but will be shown live on Rogers Cable channel 22, the city said.
