Tonight, Daniel (Alfie) Alfredsson will join an exclusive list of notable citizens who’ve received the “highest honour” in Ottawa – a key to City Hall.

Alfie is being granted the honour in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to professional hockey, both on and off the ice.

Here are just a few of the 77 other key figures who’ve been lucky enough (or important enough) to be allowed to walk through the doors of City Hall any time they want.

1) Nov. 4, 1935: John and Susan Buchan

The power couple – also known as Lord and Lady Tweedsmuir – were the first recipients of the keys to City Hall. John was the governor general of Canada at the time and Susan was establishing the Governor General’s Awards, which is alive today.

2) Oct. 12, 1951: Elizabeth II

During her 33-day tour across Canada, Elizabeth II, then a princess, received a key to City Hall as an enthusiastic gesture of reception from Ottawans. It was just four months prior to her accession of the throne.

3) Feb. 22, 1968: Nancy Greene

She was Canada’s top ski racer through the 1960’s, winning gold and silver medals at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics and overall World Cup titles. Today, the Nancy Greene Ski League is where most young Canadians get their start in ski racing.

4) Sept. 10, 1984: Marc Garneau

The first Canadian in space, Garneau, now a leading MP with the Liberals, flew on three space mission and later became president of the Canadian Space Agency. He was also chancellor of Carleton University.

5) July 8, 2013: Sandra Oh

The Ottawa-born actress is best known for her role as Dr. Cristina Yang on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, where she received a Golden Globe and five Emmy nominations. She was granted special access to City Hall two years ago for her contributions to performing arts.

Other well-known (and less well-known) recipients have included: The South African Lawn Bowling Team (1937); skater Barbara Ann Scott, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Brian (‘Killer’) Kilrea, Rick Hansen, Frank Clair, Lorne Greene, Alanis Morissette, Bryan Adams, Peter Mansbridge, Paul Anka, Rich Little, Max Keeping, Bruce Cockburn and Mayor Jim Watson.
