A collection of gear used by famed canoeist and filmmaker Bill Mason is staying in Ottawa. The Canadian Museum of History has bought it.

Mason died in 1988, and his family sold some of the gear he used to make films about canoeing on Canada’s waterways. The sale happened on eBay late Wednesday.

Bill Mason had several famous red canoes.

Becky Mason, Bill’s daughter, confirmed Thursday morning that the museum was the winning bidder. Museum officials weren’t immediately available to discuss their plans for the collection.

It includes one of Mason’s traditional canvas-and-leather packs; a yoke and a thwart from among his canoes; books and photos; moose skin moccasins; and two pots he used on canoe trips.

Becky Mason said the dented coffee pot and cooking pot were blackened by so many wood fires that “you can almost taste the wood smoke.”

There’s more canoeing gear and memorabilia to be sold in a series of lots later this spring. As well, the family plans to sell a metal Grumman canoe that Mason used, probably later this month. It will be on display March 21 and 22 at the Outdoor and Adventure Travel Show at the EY Centre.

More to come.
