Ottawa police are warning the public to be on the lookout for scammer purporting to be representing the Ottawa Police Service for an upcoming fishing derby in support of mentally challenged children.

Police issued the warning after they were alerted by a potential victim who said a caller indicated that he was raising funds on behalf of the police, and requested payment by credit card.

The OPS stressed it is not involved in any such events and asked anyone with information on this sort of fraud to call the department at 613-236-1222, ext.7300. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477(TIPS), toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.

The ice-fishing derby scam is a good illustration of the pitfalls police are targeting during March, which is fraud prevention month.

Police believe that 95 per cent of fraud is never reported and remind people never to send money or provide banking details to anyone you do not know and trust. Do not give away personal information, in case it can later be used in other crimes.

Any legitimate lottery or prize draw will not require you to pay any sort of fee or tax to collect your winnings, and it’s not possible to win money or a prize in a lottery unless you or someone else has entered you in it.
