An MRC police officer went beyond the call of duty this week to help a disabled elderly man who had been abused by a relative.
On Sunday, police in the MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais arrested a 51-year-old Gatineau man after allegations his 80-year-old uncle had been intimidated and money extorted.
Police said a man regularly, and without invitation, imposed on his uncle on weekends, staying in the older man’s home, consuming most of the food and demanding money.
On his last visit, however, the younger man became upset that his uncle had no money, turning off the water to the man’s house, breaking the shower head and taking the telephone — “thus leaving the disabled elderly man without running water.”
Police spokesman Martin Fournel said a neighbour intervened, turning on the water and calling police. The nephew, Fournel said, was subsequently arrested at his Gatineau home.
The man, Fournel said, “should be facing charges of assault, extortion, intimidation, mischief, theft and illegal presence.”
There was, however, a happier side, Fournel added. The police officer who responded to the complaint was so affected by what he saw that he purchased and installed a telephone and a new shower head for the elderly man.
The name of the generous officer was not released.
