A March Break blitz on distracted driving in Smiths Falls yielded 27 charges, 24 of them for drivers using their smartphones or handheld devices while behind the wheel.

Officers in the town conducted the crackdown over a few hours each day of Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each charge carries a fine of $280.

Most of the offenders were between the ages of 23 and 35, police said.

“The Blitz was about public safety on our roads,” Deputy Chief Mark MacGillivray said in a news release. “We are still seeing this as a problem. Too many people are still using handheld devices while driving. They are putting themselves and others around them at risk.”
