Plans to erect Sens Mile signs on Elgin Street were scrapped Thursday morning when the team asked the city to wait until the playoffs begin before launching the traditional civic celebration.

Council approved the plan to put up the Sens Miles signs early at Wednesday’s council meeting, and were to begin installing them at 9 a.m.

But Ottawa Senators president Cyril Leeder asked Mayor Jim Watson and Coun. Rick Chiarelli, who brought the motion to council, to hold off.

The move comes the day the Senators play a critical game against the top-ranked New York Rangers at the Canadian Tire Centre. The Senators currently hold the final wild card spot and are one point ahead of the Boston Bruins with a game in hand. Boston plays Anaheim Thursday night.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm and support that council has shown for the Senators with today’s motion to open The Sens Mile early,” Leeder said in his letter to Watson.

“However, we would respectfully request that we hold off on this until the team officially qualifies for a playoff spot. When we do, we will be happy to take part in an official ceremony with the mayor, council and local businesses. We feel strongly that the Sens Mile is a Playoff Tradition and would ask that council reconsider/defer today’s motion until the appropriate time.”

In a statement to the media, Watson spokesman Brook Simpson said the city would abide.

“Given that this was a goodwill motion intended to support the Ottawa Senators, along with businesses on Elgin Street and across the City, both the mover and the seconder of the motion have agreed to support the request from Ottawa Senators,” the statement said.
