A funny thing happened on the Soon-to-be-Sens Mile Thursday: A lot of people said the city shouldn’t wait too long before officially designating a good time.

Then, the city didn’t put up Sens Mile signs after all, spooked by warnings of jinxing the team if we celebrate before they make the playoffs.

Senators management pleaded with Mayor Jim Watson to hold off.

Citizen readers voted heavily for a delay on an online survey.

And so media who gathered to see the first sign go up Thursday (corner of Elgin and Gladstone, 9 a.m., pictures OK but interviews forbidden) stood around with not a Sens Mile sign in sight.

But a stroll down Elgin Street found the hardy locals thumbing their nose at superstition, mostly, and saying it’s time to celebrate.

Like Kevin Nierenhausen: “Right now we’re on an incredible roll. Not to run out of gas is the key, right? I think this (putting up signs) can only help the team. It’s going to help businesses in Ottawa too, let’s face it. Momentum is everything: We’ve got a hot goalie, we’re running good. The players are fast. They’re doing everything right. The coaches are on. So sooner or later this has got to be a good thing, I think.”

And Dave Barrows: “I’m not too sure whether it would jinx the team but I think they should put the signs up just to support the team. Even if they don’t make it, at least it shows Ottawa is supporting them. And it is a little busier on Elgin Street for sure when the Sens Mile is up. Also it just creates a better atmosphere on Elgin Street.”

Liz Verdon is not a Sens fan, but wants the Sens Mile up and running soon: “I think the fans like to have something to believe in, so they might as well put it up. And as a Pittsburgh fan, if it’s going to jinx them (Senators), I’m sorry but that’s better for me.”

Mark Boushey was working at the grocery store his family has run for more than half a century at the corner of Waverley Street: “As a business owner I like the idea of putting them up because it brings one or two people downtown to our street and it helps business. As a Senators fan I’m optimistic but it’s not a sure thing yet. It’s 10 games left. But if I have to choose, I’d choose (to) put them up.”

Scott Quennell was the voice of caution: “As far as putting a jinx on the Sens, I think it is putting a jinx on them,” he said as he watched his friend Matt Bickford wash the awning of the Fresco Bistro Italiano at 354 Elgin. “I really do. It’s voodoo, you know? I really think it’s voodoo.” He even predicts a political backlash against Coun. Rick Chiarelli, who wanted the signs up early.

Matt Bickford: “I’d put them up now. Why not? Anything to get in the spring season and get into the playoffs. It’s good for the businesses and good for the morale of the city. We need something to cheer, especially after an oppressive winter like we just had.”
