The Royal Mental Health Centre joined the long line of other provincially funded hospitals Monday, announcing job cuts and other reductions in an effort to cope with a $4.2-million shortfall.
The Ottawa Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario have already announced similar reductions.
The Royal’s base budget of $161.4 million has been frozen by the province for four years.
“These financial constraints come despite the fact that mental health and addictions have been identified as a priority by the provincial and federal governments as well as by the members of our community,” said the Royal in a statement.
The hospital is pursuing a similar strategy to other local hospitals and eliminating 18 of its 1,500 full time positions.
Most of the job cuts will be made through eliminating already vacant positions, re-assigning staff and voluntary early retirement.
Other cuts will be made to administrative costs and reducing energy costs.
Royal President and CEO George Weber said he hoped “that future funding will reflect the significance mental health and help us provide more services to more people.”
