A campaign to help a young Smiths Falls hockey player who was badly injured at a tournament in Saskatchewan in December has raised more than $200,000, according to a Facebook group set up for supporters to spread awareness.
Neil Doef, 17, a member of the Smiths Falls Bears of the Central Canada Hockey League, suffered a spinal cord injury in a Dec. 14 on-ice collision at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley, Sask. After a short stay in a Regina hospital he was flown back to Ottawa and has been undergoing treatment and rehabilitation ever since.
Doefstrong was established 15 weeks ago to assist the needs of Neil and his family, and donations have poured in from the public, hockey players from recreational leagues to the National Hockey League, from team donations and even birthday party money.
Doef’s supporters announced on their Facebook page Tuesday night that several events are planned by friends and organizations over the next few weeks and months to add to this total, in addition to continuing fundraising efforts.
The Doef family has used some of the funds to purchase a new home that will allow the injured player to have full access and will be moving in over the next few weeks to ready it for Neil to move home on a permanent basis, Doefstrong announced. He will then continue his rehab in Ottawa as an out-patient.
