Ottawa balloonist Sandra Rolfe has been recognized with a ballooning “Oscar.”
Rolfe was honoured with a 2015 Montgolfier Diploma, one of three ballooning diplomas issued annually by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the governing body for all aviation records. Rolfe received her diploma for “Best Performance, Hot Air Ballooning.”
Rolfe was recognized for a record-setting flight in February 2014 in which she was aloft for four hours and 17 minutes in a tiny AX-03 hot air balloon, bettering the previous, seven-year-old record by nearly an hour.
This winter Rolfe set another record by flying for nearly 7½ hours in a larger AX-04 hot air balloon, with the help of her ballooning partner, Bill Whelan of Vankleek Hill.
The 50-year-old Rofle, who works in human resources at the CBC, has been ballooning since 1995 and is president of the Canadian Balloon Association. She holds more than 30 Canadian and international ballooning records.

Balloonist Sandra Rolfe became a balloon pilot in 1995 and has logged 570 hours as ‘pilot in command.’ She has flown balloons as high as 14,000 feet and holds every Canadian female ballooning record, plus a handful of ‘general’ records for both women and men.
