Police have charged a parent with uttering death threats during an altercation at a high school basketball game in Hammond, east of Ottawa.

Ontario Provincial Police say they were called after a male spectator at the March 31 game at St. Francis Xavier High School became involved in a dispute with a female student on the sidelines. The man was a parent of a student in the game, police said.

Heckling, arguments and even fist fights in the stands at hockey games have prompted youth leagues across the country to adopt measures to curb “rink rage,” but such disputes are less frequent in other youth sports.

A spokesman for Russell County OPP said police there have had no reports of similar incidents, at hockey games or elsewhere.

School officials could not be reached for comment.

Peter McDermid, 49, of Rockland is scheduled to appear in court on May 6.
