As the capital’s hockey team prepares to play their last two games before playoff season, Ottawans are asking themselves: Do the Sens stand a fighting chance for a playoff spot?
Take a look at some of the numbers the Citizen crunched with hockey mathematicians Phil Birnbaum and Micah Blake McCurdy to gauge exactly where the boys stand.
3 teams still chasing for playoff spot in Atlantic Division (Ottawa, Boston and Detroit)
35% chance the Sens will make playoffs
45% chance the Sens will make playoffs if the Boston Bruins lose to Washington Capitals
21% chance Ottawa gets playoff spot and finishes ahead of Boston Bruins
23% chance of the Sens meeting the New York Rangers and placing eighth
1.5% chance the Sens will win the Stanley Cup
80 games the Sens played during the regular seasons
2 more games the Sens will play before playoffs
226 total goals the Senators have scored during regular season
35 total game-winning goals the Sens have scored during regular season
80% of the last 15 games played by the Sens have been decided by two goals are fewer
53% of the last 15 games played by the Sens went into overtime
27% chance that every game played in Atlantic Division will go into overtime until playoff season
3 times the Sens missed playoffs in 17 years
14 times the Sens made it to playoffs in 10 years
4 times the Sens won the Stanley Cup ever
1927 the last time the Sens won the Stanley Cup. Also the year that Charles Lindbergh became first person to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean, the year that the first snowblower was invented, and only one year before sliced bread was even invented.
1 in 200,000 chance of Sens getting injured by lightning strike on a golf course, maybe more if they miss playoffs

“You can accomplish anything you’re willing to work for.”
Drew Brees, quarterback, New Orleans Saints
“Get yourself tired. There is a lot of good waiting for you on the other side of tired.”
Andre Agassi, longtime tennis trainer
“Keep it simple — pick a spot and hit it.”
Tiger Woods, professional golfer
“You must fall before you can stand.”
Shaquille O’Neal, NBA all-star player
“Make sure you only let good people on your bus.”
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke University basketball coach
