Soldiers returned to guard duty at the National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 9 a.m. Thursday for the first time since Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down on Oct. 22, 2014.
But this time, the unarmed guards will be assisted by armed off-duty Ottawa police officers.
The two officers and a police vehicle stand guard at the memorial from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the same shifts as the ceremonial guards, whose weapons are not loaded.
The contract will run up until Remembrance Day, when the sentry program ends for the year.
The Citizen’s Shaamini Yogaretnam will be tweeting live from the scene, across Wellington Street from Parliament.
