A pair of teenage boys have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a popular “pet” goose that had angered the community of Picton, near Belleville.

Two geese, named William and Kate after the royal couple, were donated to the Glenwood Cemetery as a gift more than a decade ago. Their wings were clipped, leaving them unable to fly, and they’d settled down on the cemetery grounds which has a large pond.

Volunteers fed and cared for them throughout the year.

Two weeks ago, on the first day of spring, a group of youths shot Kate with a pellet gun as she paddled the pond.

William was seen paddling aimlessly around the pond, calling forlornly in the days after her disappearance.

“He’s obviously distressed,” Sandy Latchford, chairwoman of a volunteer board that looks after the historic cemetery, said Tuesday in describing the gander’s response to the loss of his mate. “He was honking and crying and circling the pond and not eating. He’s definitely not happy.”

“The whole community is upset,” says Latchford. “William and Kate were very popular with people here.”

Ontario Provincial police reported Thursday that two Prince Edward County youths, aged 17 and 18, were arrested Wednesday and charged with Criminal Code offences (killing animals other than cattle and possession of a weapon) and a charge of trespass.

They are to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton in May.
