The owner of a Bank Street hair salon watched flames consume the business he spent more than three decades building.
Eli Saikaley said he raced to the Bank Street salon just before midnight and couldn’t believe what he saw.
“I was numb,” Saikaley said Friday after looking at the remains of the Silver Scissors Hair Salon he owned with his cousin, Bruce.
“We’re the first salon in the Glebe. Thirty-six years.”
Saikaley, who also owns the neighbouring Encino Taco Shop with his son, Sebastian, said two of his employees who were closing the restaurant reported hearing three separate explosions.
“My two employees who close up at 11 o’clock called me and said there was an explosion in the building and we can’t tell what it was,” Saikaley said.
“They ran outside and they saw a guy who looked like he was hurt and looked like the coffee shop window exploded and hurt the man.”
Saikaley said he watched the fire consume the mall.
“It was flames. I could see it from Bank and Sunnyside,” he said. “I came here and saw the coffee shop in full blown flames, and I saw it trickle over to my salon, and another hour later it trickled over to the taco shop and then it made it’s way back to Pizza Hut and then made it’s way to Mac’s Milk. So all five stores we’re taken down within six hours.”
Saikaley said he had no idea how it started.
Saikaley said the salon is temporarily moving customers to another hair salon they own on Riverside Drive. Saikaley said customers with appointments in the next 48 hours can go there, although they intend to find a new home in the Glebe as soon as possible.
“I grew up in the Glebe. I have done everything in the Glebe. I participate in all the high-school events, I participate in the Glebe BIA,” said Saikaley.
The salon and taco shop were fully insured, Saikaley said, but he doesn’t want to lose customers who are inconvenienced by no longer having the salon in the neighbourhood.
“I’m sure this will take months and months and months and months, and the longer we stay there will be too much inconvenience for our customers,” said Saikaley. “We have a large base in the Glebe so going farther than we have to is not very good.”
