An Ottawa Fury soccer player was attacked by a fellow passenger on a flight to Atlanta Friday evening, the team said.
Oliver Minatel, 22, was attacked by a man sitting directly behind him on Air Canada flight 8623, according to team spokesman Graeme Ivory.
Ivory said the incident occurred with about half an hour remaining in the North American Soccer League team’s flight from Toronto to Atlanta.
Without warning or provocation, the man reached over the seat and started to strangle Oliver with his headphones cord, Ivory said.
Several teammates and other passengers immediately stepped in to restrain the man, Ivory said. He was detained for the rest of the flight, and authorities boarded the plane and arrested him in Atlanta, Ivory said.
Oliver, a five-foot-eight Brazilian winger who was the club’s leading scorer last season, was shaken up but uninjured, Ivory said.
“Y0u’re not really expecting anything like that on an airplane,” Ivory said. “But he has no injuries or anything of that nature.
“There was nothing that would have provoked this in any way,” he said. “That I can say with complete confidence in talking with everybody that was involved in the incident.”
Ivory said the man said something to the passenger next to him prior to attacking Oliver, but declined to comment on what was said.
Players and team staff have been speaking with authorities in Atlanta, including the FBI, Ivory said.
Air Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The team’s game Saturday night against the Atlanta Silverbacks will proceed as scheduled, Ivory said. The team tweeted Friday that players and staff are safe and sound, and looking forward to the game.
Oliver had seven goals and three assists in 22 games for the Fury last season. He scored a pair of goals in the club’s first-ever win, a 4-0 victory over the Carolina RailHawks.
