On the eve of the opening of the first round of the NHL playoffs, we visited Peak Academy at the Sensplex.
Our mission was to ask the hockey experts there — a half-dozen grade-5-to-8 students — to share their thoughts on the Senators’ strengths and weaknesses, the key matchups to watch, what they’d do in Ottawa coach Dave Cameron’s shoes, and which team is going to win.

Michael Bernier, 11, thinks he knows how to solve Habs netminder Carey Price.

“(The Senators’) strength right now is probably Andrew Hammond, and I think their weakness might be their defence — there are a lot of breakaways happening, and the defence give up a lot of good opportunities. If I was the coach of the Senators, I would tell my players to always shoot at (Carey) Price because he’s a really good goalie, and shoot high on him, because he’s really good low.
“My prediction for the series will probably be 4-3, Game 7, for Ottawa.”

Kathryn Stockdale, 13, says Ottawa’s ‘scrambled’ defensive play sometimes makes her uncomfortable.

“The Senators’s strengths and weaknesses are: they’re really recently generating some offence, and they’re able to work (the puck) around really nicely. Their weaknesses are back-checking and their defensive zone. In their defensive zone they get a little bit scrambled, which makes you want to bite your nails.
“I think it’s going to be a really good rivalry, and it’s going to be close and in the last game they’re going to be tied and then the Sens are going to pull through with a win and take it over.”

Julian Recine, 12, predicts a Montreal series victory in six games.

“I think the Sens just have to be constantly taking shots on Carey Price and try to get him off his game, because he will be the decider of the series.
“My prediction? Although the Sens have been red-hot lately, I think the Montreal Canadiens will win the series four games to two.”

Twelve-year-old Charlie Johnson believes the Senators’ recent propensity for penalties may cost them against the Canadiens.
Charlie Johnson, 12
“The Sens have been really good lately, but they’ve been taking a lot of penalties and I think that’ll hurt them because the Montreal Canadiens have a really good power-play and they can finish on all their chances.
“My prediction is it will go to Game 7, because these are two really even teams right now. The Sens are really hot and the Montreal Canadiens are kind of not at their best, so I think this will be a good matchup. I think the Sens will pull it off.”

The Senators owe much of their success to goaltending and offence, says Athena Williams, 12. If she was in coach Dave Cameron’s shoes, she’d be concentrating on improving the team’s defence.

“The Senators’ strengths are offence and goaltending. Their weakness is defence. Both goalies are pretty good; Hammond has had a pretty good season and Carey Price has been good, too.
“If I was coach of the Senators, I’d be working a lot on defence, because they seem to be giving up a lot back there.
“My prediction is that the Sens are going to beat Montreal, 4-3 or 4-2, and move on to the next round.”

Noah Shannon, 13, notes that the Sens’ game changed with the arrival of goalie Andrew Hammond, but that he’s going to have to really be on his game to beat Montreal.
Noah Shannon, 13
“The Sens are pretty strong. Their goaltending has been great. Since Andrew Hammond has come in it’s really changed their game. But I think that sometimes they give up too many odd-man rushes and their defensive play is sometimes weak. Hammond is going to have to really be on his game, and we’re going to have to put a lot of pucks past Carey Price to be able to beat them.
“My prediction is that the Sens beat them in seven or six games, because they played really good against (Montreal) this year and that with their current momentum they’ll be able to beat them and move on to the next round.”
