A 21-year-old Gatineau man faces more than $1,700 in fines after a chase of two motorcyclists in excess of 180 kilometres per hour on a Quebec highway Wednesday.
According to the Sûreté du Québec, police spotted a pair of eastbound bikers driving recklessly on Highway 50 shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police tried to pull the pair over, but the bikers ignored sirens and sped off, accelerating to the Buckingham Avenue exit and then headed north toward Highway 315, with police in pursuit.
Police again attempted to stop the motorcyclists, without success.
The two got back onto Highway 50 and headed westbound. Shortly afterwords, police lost sight of the them.
However, police managed to track down one of the riders. The 21-year-old, whose identity was not released, faces one charge of speeding and another of failing to stop for police.
He is facing total fines of $1,737 and could receive up to 14 demerit points on his drivers licence.
A police investigation to determine the identity of the second driver is ongoing.
